INVASIVENESS
Very low
Microdermabrasion involves exfoliating several of the layers of the epidermis, or the surface skin, to achieve fresher and smoother skin.
Microdermabrasion involves a wand with a diamond tip that rubs off the upper layers of skin. The dead skin is then suctioned away. This facilitates blood flow and oxygen transfer to the treatment area. The process of exfoliating the skin triggers increased cell division, stimulating production of collagen.
This treatment gives you brighter, more even-toned, and smoother skin with less texture. The pores are cleaned out. An additional benefit is that after the procedure, your skincare products will be absorbed into the skin more easily and thus become more effective. Note that these results are temporary. They will stay for two to four weeks before fading.
The procedure is quick; it lasts between 20 and 60 minutes.
You will immediately notice brighter, more even-toned skin with less texture. The treatment does a great job cleaning out pores. An additional benefit is that it improves the effectiveness of skin-care products; anything you put on your skin will be absorbed easily.
For optimal results, you will need a series of treatments.
This procedure is less than one hour long and calls for minimal to no downtime. Your skin may feel tight and dry and look pinkish post-treatment. Use a gentle moisturizer and these effects should diminish in a day. Additionally, your skin may be more sensitive because of the treatment, so wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher for a few weeks after microdermabrasion.
Patients with sensitive skin or active acne should avoid microdermabrasion. Additionally, it is not recommended for those with rosacea, undiagnosed facial lesions, facial warts, autoimmune disorders, and undiagnosed diabetes. Anyone else with dull skin, texture, uneven tone, and more can benefit from a series of microdermabrasion treatments.
The face is the primary area of treatment for microdermabrasion.
Microdermabrasion is considered very safe. This non-invasive procedure is suitable for people of all ages. It is compatible with most skin types and skin tones. Side effects are rare but can include minor tenderness, some swelling, or redness for a few hours after being treated.
For the best results and to get the most out of microdermabrasion treatments, we recommend doing multiple microdermabrasion treatments spaced one or two months apart.
Chemical and micro-laser peels are great alternatives that also exfoliate superficial skin and stimulate cell turnover.
