The presence of normally functioning valve in your veins allow a unidirectional blood return to your heart via the deep vein (90%) but also via the superficial (saphenous 10%) circulation. In case of deficient valves the circulation become backward causing reflux of blood into your legs. This will lead to the formation of varicose veins overtime. This abnormal circulation is detected using venous Doppler examination of the lower extremities, an essential exam to plan the treatment of your of varicose veins. The treatment of your varicose veins start from treating the abnormal saphenous or perforators veins followed by the treatment of the visible veins under the skin. The most commonly used techniques are ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) and endovenous laser ablation (EVLA).
